About

Shelby’s Book Shoppe is an independent, secondhand book boutique and exchange located in Minden, Nevada near the beautiful Lake Tahoe.

The shoppe was created in 2005 by founder Linda Finch, under the name Eddy St. Book Exchange. Linda later renamed the store after her red heeler, a sweet, friendly greeter whose face graced the store’s logo.

The bookstore was purchased in 2020 by Carson Valley native Bethany Davey Frediani, whose love of books has inspired her to cultivate and develop Shelby’s to ensure that it flourishes far into the future.

Bethany has carried on the canine tradition by styling the new logo after the current bookshop dog, Sirius Black (named after his parents’ love of the Harry Potter books).

Shop

Our store is filled with gently loved books of all genres just waiting to be discovered by a new reader.

If you are local to Northern Nevada, you can stop by our retail location in Minden and give shop dog Sirus a belly rub while you're here.

Or you can shop our full inventory online including our:

  • Limited selection of vintage books

  • Collector’s editions

  • Coffee table books

  • Children's books

  • Fiction titles & non-fiction titles

You never know what you’ll find in a used bookstore! New books arrive daily and it’s like a treasure hunt every time.

Credit

Our used book credit program is at the heart of what we do and allows us to keep our inventory fresh, diverse, and well-stocked.

We accept the following for credit:

  • Gently-used paperback fiction and non-fiction

  • Selective hardbacks (think popular new releases within the last year or biographies/history/DIY crafting books).

  • Like-new CD audiobooks

Credit Rate

All books receive $.50 store credit each.

Store credit may be used for half of an in-store purchase (not usable online). The remainder of the purchase must be paid by cash or credit/debit card. Any remaining store credit will be recorded and given to you to use later. We don’t keep customer files, so you must bring your credit back with you to use next time.

When choosing books to bring in, consider:

  • We sell all books brought in to us, so if they’re not in a condition you would buy, chances are neither would anyone else. We don’t sell water-damaged, stained, marked-up, or otherwise falling apart items.

  • Spine condition is key – if you flip the book open and it cracks in the middle so that you can see the binding glue between pages, the spine is broken and the book won’t be accepted.

  • Please make sure that all audiobook CDs are present.

  • We have a strict zero cigarette smoke policy.

  • If your books have been sitting for a while, in a garage or otherwise, please wipe them down with a soft cloth to remove dust, spiderwebs, etc.

  • Staff reserves the right to make final decisions on all books.
